Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it's unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it's peak functionality.

  • SHARPENING: Use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures.
  • CLEANING: Open and close the blades in warm water several times. When they have dried it is recommended to apply a small drop of oil between the blade, tool shank and the spring or locking mechanism.
  • WARNING: Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.
  • RECOMMENDATION: Swiss Army Knife Oil (Item No.4.3301). FEATURES: (1) neutral odor and taste, (2) highly resistant to aging, (3) good wear and corrosion protection qualities, and (4) Food safe

The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox

The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.

Functionality

The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.

Innovation is our Tradition

Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.

Iconic Design

In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

I got one of these when I graduated college in 1992. Lost that one years later, but got another just like it. This is my third of the exact same model. In my opinion as a faithful disciple of St. Angus MacGyver, this is just about the prefect combination of tools for whatever life throws at you, including car repair, home repair, projects, and defusing bombs. I have daily carried this exact knife for 28 years now, and I have found it invaluable for too many things to name. I always said I got two things when I graduated from college: a diploma and a Swiss Army Knife; since then, I have used the latter much more than the former. Special note: when not being used to open bottles of vintage wine, the corkscrew is amazing at threading through knots in small children''s shoes to loosen them and re-tie them.

I did a lot of research into the different types of Swiss Army knives to see which one I would use the most. I originally bought the Pioneer Alox Silver knife because I liked that its the same model that the actual Swiss Army soldiers used from the 60''s up till now. This knife is almost exactly the same as the Spartan in terms of size. It''s big and has two slots with tools. The Pioneer comes with a large blade, can opener with screwdriver, bottle opener with screw driver and sharp pointed edge for poking holes.

I was pleased with the knife since it looks classy but I wanted something that was more useful for everyday use. I like the Spartan because its identical to the original Swiss knife, but I wanted to look further. I stumbled onto so many different models for a variety of uses. Tools such as the wood saw, pliers, magnifying glass for instance I found that I don''t use everyday. Plus I found that its better to use other more sturdier tools than a knife if you want to use pliers. The more tools make these knives too bulky and not ideal for carrying everywhere.

I wanted something simple, yet eclectic. I have a minichamp, which is great because it has tools like scissors, an orange peeler and a pen. But I found that I use scissors a lot.

Finally, I noticed the Climber and after much comparison, I decided its the best one for ME. Why? Because its not too bulky first off. It only has 3 slots for tools, making it slightly thicker than the Spartan but not as bulky as the Explorer. It has scissors which are perfect in size. It''s essentially like the Spartan but with the added scissors and parcel carrier(which I find to be useless for most cases). And honestly this is all you need unless you need to cut wood or watch insects from up close with a magnifying glass. This is perfect for the urban gentleman.

Some would prefer the Tinker because they find the separate philips screwdriver more useful than the corkscrew. Well fear not because the can opener, which comes on almost all swiss knives, has a screwdriver at the tip that''s perfect for even the smallest Philips heads. The the extra room for a large philips screwdriver is useless because you already have a tool for that. Plus the corkscrew is useful in party type situations. So pick this over the Tinker.

For those who want something more compact, try out the Compact model. This knife has only two slots but has almost everything including scissors. However, this knife consolidates the can opener and bottle opener. The catch? The tool is very thin and the tip isn''t good for Philips screws, only good for flat heads. Also, there is no small blade.

For those who don''t care for the corkscrew or scissors, get the Pioneer. Why? Because its essentially the same model used by Swiss soldiers and it looks classy. Additionally, the large blade is much bigger than the large blade of regular swiss knives.

But I recommend the Climber 100%. You even have more color options to choose from with this model. I would go with the classic red, that way everyone knows you''re holding an awesome Swiss Army Knife. Happy shopping!

I wanted to get my son an Officer''s knife like the one i''ve carried for many years. It seemed it was no longer in production. So I chose this "Army Climber Pocket Knife" and the nearest thing. It supposedly had a saw and lost the item which you evidently use to carry string tied bags. The packaging said "Army Climber Pocket Knife" but when we opened it on Christmas -- amazingly -- it was the "Officer" knife that I actually wanted. So there is some kind of mix up in what it says on the box and in the description and what really gets put in the box. Buyer beware. If you really wanted an "Army Climber Pocket Knife" you''d have been disappointed. I wasn''t really.

This Swiss knife is more of an urban type of carry. Scissors to cut a tightly sealed bag of food, the bottle opener to open a cold beer, a can opener to open some beans because you can''t find the actual can opener because you live in an apartment with four other guys and you have no idea where anything is, the corkscrew to open the bottle of wine so you can be the hero for the night, the hanger thing to hang the Swiss on a nail so you can drape your coat over it so it doesn''t touch the floor, the knives to cut up some fruit when you''re on the go, the reamer to cut a hole in your belt so you can tighten it even more because you lost weight because you don''t have any food because your housemates keep eating everything in sight, and the toothpick to pick your teeth so you don''t look gross when you take a girl out to dinner.
Tip: Get the red one, people can immediately identify it as a Swiss Army Knife so they won''t freak out when you pull it out in public.

I purchased two of these knives for my children as birthday presents. I think that the knife is a great first knife to have because of all the keen functions it provides. I was gifted a knife like this when I was seven by my Grandfather. He believed that that everyone should carry a knife. You never know when you might need one? After comparing the new ones to mine, I did not see a difference except for the wear and tear on mine.

It is very much the philosophy of 80-90% function that you can carry 100% of the time, instead of 90-100% of functionality but only carry 20% of time. Sometimes I do miss a Philips screwdriver or a pair of pliers, but not very often.

This is my second, to replace one I lost to customs (my own stupidity). The previous one has survived 19 years, and the blades are still sharp and all functions work as new. 100% trustable quality and longevity.

The prices are already inflated due to currency difference and yet they mark it up just a bit more for some reason. Anyways can''t complain about that , thats what you get for living in a third world country. The product is good and lives upto its name. But the india division is sitting on their asses. Many people here complained about bad packaging and used products. I was skeptical but optimistic about getting a good piece myself. Nah. Got a used one. The red outer layer has many scratches. The blades had fingerprints. I was using a cloth to open the blades and yet I found 3 fingerprints on the large blade. The corkscrew also had stains all over. The packaging was neither blister style nor box. It looked like the packaging for lipstick. Just a narrow cardboard box. You pay upwards of 2000 rupees for a tiny pocket knife and don''t even get a presentable packaging for it. Even that was torn and used looking. Abysmal. Treating their non privileged customers like subhumans. Don''t buy if you need it urgently because you might have to return it. Brought it for my brother for his bday before he leaves for work. Can''t even return it. A descent product with a slightly bloated price at best and on top of that you get a used piece. Shameful. Just because india is a third world country you get this kind of treatment. Shameful
